Why I Built Centryn Academy; A Second Chance that Changed Everything

By Krishna Patel, Founder & Executive Director Centryn Academy

There are moments in life that divide everything into before and after. For me, that moment came nearly three years ago, lying in a hospital bed, waiting for a heart transplant.

I won’t dress it up. It was the most frightening experience of my life. The kind of experience that strips away everything unnecessary and forces you to face a single, uncompromising question: “If I survive this, what am I going to do with the time I’ve been given?”

I survived. And the answer to that question became Centryn Academy.

The View from the Other Side

When you go through something like a heart transplant, your perspective changes in ways that are almost impossible to fully explain to people who haven’t been there. The noise of everyday life the small frustrations, the reasons we tell ourselves we’ll start something tomorrow all of it fades. What remains is clarity.

I lay there thinking about my city. Wolverhampton. A city I love. A city full of talent, grit, creativity, and potential that too often goes unseen, unsupported, and underestimated. I thought about the people I’d crossed paths with over the years — young people who had slipped through the cracks of a system not built for them, entrepreneurs with brilliant ideas and no one to guide them, individuals with special educational needs who had been told directly or indirectly that certain paths simply weren’t for them.

I thought: “Someone needs to do something about this”. And then I realised I could be that someone.

Why Wolverhampton. Why Now?

Centryn Academy begins here, in Wolverhampton, and that is entirely intentional. We are not a national organisation parachuting into a community we don’t understand. This is my home. These are my people. And the need here is real, urgent, and too important to ignore.

Across the UK, thousands of young people sit in the NEET category Not in Education, Employment or Training. They are not statistics. They are individuals with stories, with capability, with ambition that has simply never been met with the right opportunity. Wolverhampton has its share of these young people, and they deserve better than to be written off by a system that wasn’t designed with them in mind.

Then there are those with Special Educational Needs learners who often require a different approach, more patience, more creativity, and more belief. SEN learners are not less capable. In many cases, they are extraordinarily capable. They simply need learning environments that respect how their minds work, rather than forcing them to conform to rigid structures that were never built for them.

And there are the entrepreneurs the dreamers and the doers. The individual who has an idea but no roadmap. The person who wants to build something but has never been taught how. Wolverhampton has an incredible entrepreneurial spirit. Centryn Academy exists to channel it.

Beyond all of these, we are open to absolutely anyone who wants to learn. Full stop. No prerequisites. No judgement. Just a genuine desire to grow.

What Centryn Academy Actually Is

Centryn Academy is a learning community built on the belief that education should be accessible, relevant, and transformational regardless of your background, your diagnosis, your employment status, or your past.

We combine structured learning with real-world application. We work with learners as individuals, not as categories. We create environments where people feel safe enough to try, to fail, to learn, and to try again. Because that cycle try, fail, learn, grow is the foundation of every success story I have ever witnessed.

For SEN learners, we are committed to building programmes that are genuinely inclusive not inclusive in name, but in practice. That means flexible delivery, patient and skilled educators, and a culture where every learner is valued for exactly who they are.

For NEET individuals, we provide more than courses. We provide direction, mentorship, and a bridge back into confidence and opportunity. We understand that for many, the barrier to re-engagement isn’t ability it’s trust. Trust that someone actually believes in them. We do.

For entrepreneurs, we offer practical, honest guidance. Not theory for theory’s sake, but the tools, the networks, and the knowledge to take an idea and build something real from it.

And for anyone else who simply wants to learn whether you’re 18 or 58, whether you have qualifications or none there is a place for you here.

The Bigger Vision

We start in Wolverhampton, but we do not intend to stay small. The model we are building here, rooted in community, driven by purpose, and proven through results is one we intend to scale. Other cities have the same challenges. Other communities have the same untapped potential. What works here can work elsewhere.

But we build it right first. We earn trust before we chase growth. We measure our success not in enrolment numbers, but in lives genuinely changed. That is the standard I hold us to.

A Personal Promise

I received a second chance at life because of the extraordinary gift of an organ donor and the skill of an incredible medical team. Every day I walk out of my door, I carry that gift with me. It is not something I take lightly.

Centryn Academy is my way of paying it forward. Of ensuring that the second chance I was given creates second chances and first chances for others.

If you are a student, a parent, an educator, an investor, a council leader, or simply someone who believes that talent should never be wasted because of circumstance I invite you to be part of what we are building.

Wolverhampton is ready. And so are we.
